Arirang — Echoes of Liberation
Performed in honour of Korea’s 80th Liberation Day

Arirang has carried the grief, resilience, and hope of the Korean people for generations — through occupation, war, and division.

Even though I immigrated to Canada at the age of six, I come from a family deeply scarred by war and displacement.

My maternal grandmother was born under Japanese occupation — orphaned at the age of 7, abused beyond words, and forbidden to study her own language. My maternal grandfather came south from what is now North Korea to visit a friend; while he was there, the Korean War began and the borders closed forever.

My paternal grandfather fought in the Vietnam War, returning home with devastating mental and physical injuries — and, when my father was just six, took his own life in front of him. My paternal grandmother gave birth to my father at 18, and worked tirelessly to survive, often leaving a seven-year-old boy to care for his two younger sisters.

As much as I want to believe we have healed as a nation, Han — a deep, collective grief born from injustice, oppression, and loss — still lives in me.

This performance is where my upcoming album begins: to honour how far we have come, to remember what we have endured, and to stand with and fight for the countless nations and peoples who still endure the same pain my family lived through — only 80 years ago.

아리랑 — 광복의 메아리
대한민국 광복 80주년 기념 연주

아리랑은 세대를 거쳐, 일제강점기와 전쟁, 분단 속에서도 한국인의 슬픔과 회복력, 그리고 희망을 담아왔습니다.

비록 저는 여섯 살에 가족과 함께 캐나다로 이민을 갔지만, 저는 전쟁과 이산의 상처를 깊이 안고 있는 가문에서 태어났습니다.
외할머니는 일제강점기에 태어나, 7살에 고아가 되었고, 말로 다 할 수 없는 학대를 받으며, 자기 나라 언어조차 배울 수 없었습니다. 외할아버지는 친구를 만나러 내려왔다가 6.25 전쟁이 발발하며 국경이 닫혀, 평생 고향으로 돌아가지 못했습니다.

친할아버지는 베트남 전쟁에 참전했다가 심각한 부상과 함께 돌아왔고, 아버지가 여섯 살이던 해에 그 앞에서 생을 마감했습니다. 친할머니는 열여덟에 아버지를 낳고 생계를 위해 몸을 바쳤으며, 어린 아버지는 일곱 살에 두 여동생을 돌보며 살아야 했습니다.

우리 민족이 많이 회복했다고 믿고 싶지만, 한(恨)은 여전히 제 안에 깊이 자리하고 있습니다.

이 연주는 그 한에서 시작되었습니다. 우리가 걸어온 길을 기리고, 견뎌온 시간을 기억하며, 여전히 전쟁과 억압 속에 살아가는 전 세계의 수많은 나라와 사람들과 함께하기 위해 — 불과 80년 전, 제 가족이 겪었던 그 고통을 기억하며.
