This track was something of a slow burner as far as single success is concerned. With Eric Idle on lead vocals, it forms the closing sequence to the Monty Python film ‘Life of Brian’, one of the best Python films and indeed one of the funniest movies ever (at least in my opinion!).
It was first released a double A side single when the film debuted in 1979 but failed to chart, then again in 1988 when it missed the charts once again. By the 1990’s the film had gained cult status and this song started to gain attention, leading to it being release yet again, this time reaching number 3 in the UK singles chart. Eric Idle actually recorded a radio edit, minus the word ‘shit’, and with the end comments which previously referred to the end of the film being replaced with alternative comments about the end of the record. That version was later available on various compilation albums etc.. and is known as ‘the 1991 version’.
Since then the song has become a classic, being sung and parodied time and again at various events including the closing ceremony of the 2012 London Olympic Games. In 2014 Idle recorded yet another version as a Football World Cup anthem.
This won’t be new to anyone but it’s too much of a classic not to be included on this channel.
